El verdadero riesgo está en lo que no estás viendo: QA/QC más allá de la inspección

A supplier may deliver on its commitments, and yet a critical piece of equipment may still not be available when your project needs it.

In CAPEX and OPEX projects, knowing a supplier’s track record is important, but it is no longer enough. When critical equipment is manufactured or sourced internationally, risk also lies in everything happening around that supplier.

In diverse and emerging markets such as Mexico and other LATAM countries, geopolitical uncertainty and shifting supply chains make it increasingly important to look beyond the promised delivery date. The question is: What needs to happen across the entire supply chain for that critical asset to actually be available when the project needs it?

In our experience, schedule alignment deserves particular attention. A facility may be mechanically complete, but if a critical piece of equipment, component, or connection is still missing, operations may not be ready to begin: Completing construction does not necessarily mean being ready to produce.

This is why I believe the value of QA/QC goes beyond isolated or routine inspections. It is also about looking at the complete supply chain, identifying potential bottlenecks early, and understanding their nature. A bottleneck can be physical, industrial, or regulatory, and each one requires a different response.

This is where an integrated quality assurance plan, considered from the early stages of a project, becomes particularly relevant. It can help monitor critical milestones, align schedules, identify potential deviations, and evaluate alternatives before an issue affects commissioning or start-up.

For international procurement, perhaps the question should no longer be only: “When will my supplier deliver?”

But also: “What could prevent this asset from actually being ready when my project needs it?”
In my view, that is where a more strategic conversation about QA/QC and supply chain risk management begins.

Las empresas continúan incorporando proveedores en otros mercados para reducir dependencias y responder a cambios comerciales o interrupciones. Contar con más opciones también implica el reto de mantener una calidad constante y coordinar la producción y las entregas entre distintos países.
