A heavy load

I find it mind blowing how massive these Offshore Wind monopiles have become. Essentially just a very large welded pipe (very, very large!), with all of the technical and integrity challenges that go with that. But ultimately it is not being installed horizontally, but vertically - forced into the sea bed and the whole installation process and support equipment being subject to wave forces. What a challenge!

With monopile diameters now exceeding 10 metres and weights surpassing 2,000 tonnes, installation dynamics are becoming increasingly complex. As monopiles continue to grow in diameter and mass, these coupled dynamics will become increasingly important. Larger foundations attract greater hydrodynamic forces, while heavier structures alter the response of the combined vessel-pile system.
