The American Petroleum Institute (API) has published the second edition of API Recommended Practice 1176 (API RP 1176), Assessment and Management of Cracking in Pipelines. The updated standard gives pipeline operators a comprehensive framework for managing cracking-related threats and reducing the risk of pipeline failure. Assessing and responding to these threats represents one of industry’s most technically demanding integrity challenges. Not every crack-like feature detected through inspection presents the same level of risk. The recommended practice equips operators to better characterize cracks, integrate inspection and operating data, prioritize repairs, and establish reassessment schedules. This helps operators focus resources on the conditions that pose the greatest risk to pipeline integrity.
