Europe’s leading role in the transition towards more sustainable aviation is certainly good news. As one of the regions of the world increasingly affected by climate change, as demonstrated by the multiple heatwaves experienced across the continent this summer, Europe has strong reasons to accelerate the transition towards transportation systems with lower carbon emissions.
Aviation remains one of the most carbon-intensive forms of transport, particularly when considering long-distance passenger travel. Reducing the sector’s environmental footprint therefore requires a combination of technological innovation, operational improvements and, above all, the adoption of lower-carbon fuels.
Europe is taking a leading role in promoting the increasing use of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF), supported by a regulatory framework that is currently more advanced than those adopted in many other regions. SAF can be produced from a variety of feedstocks, including biomass that does not compete with food production, as well as through emerging pathways involving captured carbon.
However, not all SAF is the same. Strict sustainability criteria and certification schemes are used to assess SAF production, taking into account both the origin of the feedstock and the production process. These safeguards are essential to ensure that the transition to SAF genuinely contributes to reducing aviation’s carbon footprint rather than simply shifting its environmental impact elsewhere.
The latest developments in Europe’s SAF market, and the widening gap with the US and Asia, are therefore an important signal of how regulation and investment can accelerate the transition towards cleaner aviation.
